CORRIPONDENZE | SEMI

Corrispondenze is an independent art magazine, published every six months.

Corrispondenze magazine is both a printed space and a stepping-stone to foster new and old relations. It is an ongoing investigation whose founding principle is “correspondence” and whose aim is to highlight the interconnections between human living and the place hosting it.

Dwelling, as we conceive it, does not stop at the doorstep of our homes, nor behind the walls of the city. Quite the opposite, it ranges from the natural environment to the relationship people have with it. It thus embraces not only the physical places, but also of the web of relations among the individuals inhabiting them.

Semi (seeds) is the title, and indeed the subject, of the first issue of Correspondence. It refers to the seeds that will be here enclosed with the collected texts. Those seeds are intended to fall to the ground during the act of reading, thereby germinating into new ideas – by virtue of an interconnection of stimuli and perspectives.

Corrispondenze|Semi explores Turin’s territory by narrating multiple projects that encompass the matter of space from an artistic, but also an anthropological, sociological, urbanistic, and naturalistic point of view.

TERRITORY AND ENVIRONMENT

This section investigates the relationship between human dwelling and the environment. This relationship takes tangible form in what we define as territory, the result of a delicate relationship of coexistence and correspondence between living beings, a point of contact with otherness.

Urban Herbarium

BY SIMONE SCARDINO

INTRODUCTION BY

ANDREA LERDA E SIMONE SCARDINO

Simone Scardino presents Erbario Urbano (Urban Herbarium), a research project that focuses on the plant world from an eco-anthropocentric point of view in favour of a conscious and functional coexistence between nature and culture. Erbario Urbano stems from the desire to get to know the species with which we coexist closely, establishing a line of dialogue with them, with a focus on the relationship between the urban environment and what we commonly define as “weeds”.

Andrea Lerda introduces the Erbario Urbano project through a short conversation with Simone Scardino, giving hints and reflections that highlight the importance of recovering empathy with the nature that surrounds us.

COMMUNITY AND PARTICIPATION

This section provides for the analysis and restitution of artistic experiences that aim to create physical and immaterial spaces for sharing, dialogue and contact. Places in which participation is presented as a necessary element of the relationship.

The river Dora has been an important infrastructure for Turin, both from an economic-productive and morphological-urban point of view. It has been a ‘service’ river for the city. In particular, it served production. This has led to the birth of productive enclaves and energy mobility networks, which have suffocated and fragmented the river’s territory. Behind an only superficial post-industrial identity, this space reveals itself to be very heterogeneous, a territory of different “climates” that continuously negotiate their coexistence. Trying to abandon a functionalist approach in order to consider the complex stratification of the territory, and taking inspiration from the reflections expressed by the philosopher-urbanist Sébastien Marot in “Making a world”, the intention is to look at this place in a different way.

A re-exploration that overlaps with the exploration of the concept of coexistence.

«Making a World»

Exploring coexistence on the Dora territory

BY ALINA ROXANA SALAHORU

CLEARING
AWAY

Graphic and critical presentation of the material collected during the projects carried out as part of the FAREspazio research. These interventions, which originate from a process of correspondence, will be reproposed here in order to continue a potentially infinite practice of exchange on the themes addressed from time to time.

What inhabiting a space means to you?

BY PAOLA BOSCAINI E CRISTINA MATERASSI
